These holistic programs and services reach more than 11,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 340 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.

Department Summary

The Community Programs department offers a comprehensive suite of integrated services aimed at eliminating barriers to attain and sustain equitable health, social, educational, housing, and economic outcomes. We serve youth, adults, and seniors through services that include: 1) school-based achievement and mentoring in middle and high schools and youth workforce development; 2) food security, housing access, and financial capability; and 3) services dedicated to enhancing the well-being of low-income residents and seniors. We deliver culturally rooted, multi-lingual services, providing vital support to residents in Oakland and throughout Alameda County

Position Summary

The Financial Capability Coach delivers personalized one-on-one coaching and workshops to low-income individuals and families, aiming to enhance financial literacy and improve their financial stability. The coaching focuses on credit improvement, budgeting, income enhancement, savings growth, debt reduction, understanding banking options, accessing public benefits, ITIN registration, and comprehensive financial management. The Coach also conducts outreach to promote these services and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Mam, ensuring effective support for Mam-speaking clients.

Responsibilities
  • Lead outreach and engagement efforts for Financial Capability services, including financial coaching, free tax assistance, and programs such as Brilliant Baby and Kindergarten to College (K2C).
  • Deliver personalized financial coaching sessions to evaluate clients’ needs and assist them in setting goals, creating budgets, improving credit, managing debt, increasing savings, and understanding banking options.
  • Maintain ongoing client follow-up to ensure progress.
  • Facilitate financial educational and skill-building workshops.
  • Collaborate with the Financial Capability Coordinator to design and support the delivery of financial education and skill-building workshops.
  • Assist clients with the completion of Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) applications.
  • Implement targeted outreach strategies to enhance access to financial coaching, free tax assistance, and other financial wellness services.
  • Provide interpretation for monolingual Mam-speaking clients.
  • Assist with the free tax services program as needed.
  • Collect and enter data accurately into the Salesforce database in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with the Housing & Financial Services Manager to integrate service data and program workflow into Salesforce database to meet program objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with other teams at The Unity Council to maintain integrated service model.
  • Opportunity to become a certified tax preparer with provided training.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in financial coaching, career services, social services, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with low-income, diverse populations, including immigrants, people of color, seniors, youth, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Fluency in English, Spanish and Mam is required.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively in both group settings and one-on-one interactions.
  • Proficient in completing forms, assembling paperwork, and maintaining organized records.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team and external partners.
  • Strong alignment with The Unity Council’s values, mission, and vision of social equity.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
Essential Functions
  • Advanced computer skills with strong MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopier, fax, etc.).
  • Regularly required to sit and walk for long periods of time.
  • Regularly required to use hands to operate a computer and other office equipment.
